Every month since Veterans Day of 2015, the City of Boston's Office of Veterans’ Services continues to organize volunteers in a different neighborhood to hand deliver resource packets and a special challenge coin to the veterans of Boston. Operation Thank a Veteran is not only a humble gesture of goodwill, but the beginning of a conversation that connects military veterans and their families to the communities that they call home.

On this day, we are joined by Mayor Martin J. Walsh as our community partner, Urban Edge, hosts volunteers to visit the veterans of Jamaica Plain. It is a day of connecting with our neighbors in the commonalities that we share, respectfully educating each other on how to be supportive using our diversity as strengths and serving one another in building an inclusive and thriving city with compassion.

Military Appreciation Night at the Boston Ballet

Since 2013, the Office of Veterans Services has partnered with the Boston Ballet to give the gift of the performing arts to Boston’s military families, veterans, and active duty personnel. In 2016, the Highland Street Foundation supported that gift as a sponsor in what has now become an annual tradition as military families are treated to a private reception before enjoying the season’s most magical production, The Nutcracker.

On November 10, 2017, the City of Boston Veterans’ Services and Brighton Marine held the annual Boston Veterans Town Hall event for veterans and members of the community in recognition of Veterans Day. The event was part of a National Veterans Town Hall Initiative conceived by author Sebastian Junger. It is a community forum aiming to establish a greater understanding between local veterans and the friends and neighbors they fought for.

In the tradition of warrior storytelling, veterans were invited to describe the pride, grief, rage, or quiet appreciation of life that military service, sometimes during war, bestowed upon them. Veterans shared what their service meant to them through a story, summary of service, message, letter home, excerpt from a war journal, or even the story behind a photograph or other artistic medium.

The event was organized to be solemn and non-political. There was no question-and-answer period afterward. No debate on the merits or justifications of war, no recriminations or accusations. This was simply a chance for veterans to tell the community about their experience. Non-veterans are invited to attend, to listen, and to learn.

The William Joiner Institute for the Study of War and Social Consequences sponsored the 29th Writers’ Workshop, which features classes and individual consultations in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, and memoir, last month. The two-week workshop also included special topics such as songwriting, using theater for social change, and using art to build bridges in Iraq. The Writers’ Workshop kicked off on June 20 with a panel titled, “Women Veterans Speak.”

The panelists were Margaret Laneri, the director of the Worcester Vet Center and a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves; Savina Martin, a U.S. Army veteran, social justice activist, advocate, and writer who is working on a play about veterans; Giselle Sterling, a Marine Corps veteran and Commissioner of Veterans’ Services for the City of Boston; and Nicole Waybright, who was part of the first wave of women to serve at sea on combat vessels. The U.S. Navy veteran published her first book, Long Way Out: A Young Woman's Journey of Self-Discovery and How She Survived the Navy's Modern Cruelty at Sea Scandal, in February.

Erin Leach-Ogden, the grant and research coordinator for the Joiner Institute and a U.S. Army veteran herself, moderated the discussion. Leach-Ogden began the discussion by reading portions of a 2014 New York Times article called “The Things She Carried,” written by Cara Hoffman.
